San Mames Stadiun - Athletic Bilbao San Mames Stadiun - Athletic Bilbao (also known as Nuevo San Mamés or San Mames Barria) is a football stadium in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. Inaugurated on 16 September 2013, it replaces the "old" San Mamés as the home of Athletic Bilbao. The first phase of planning occurred in early 2004, with the first contracts being signed in late 2006, following approval to build in March 2006. The new stadium will be built next to the existing San Mamés on land occupied by the Bilbao International Trade Fair until 2003 . On 26 May 2010 at 12:00 a.m. the groundbreaking ceremony took place in San Mamés.[4] The event was attended by: Lehendakari from the Basque Country, Patxi López; Deputy General of Biscay, José Luis Bilbao; Mayor of Bilbao, Iñaki Azkuna; Chairman of Bilbao Bizkaia Kutxa, Mario Fernández; President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Ángel María Villar, and President of the Athletic Club, Fernando García Macua.
